Meet Tim: Hawkland’s Site Manager Championing Sustainable Construction in Bristol.

A Unique Path to Construction

Tim’s journey into construction took an unconventional route. His career began in 2017 with a self-build project for his family: an oak-framed, hempcrete house. Though his background was initially in graphic design with a focus on sustainable design practices, this self-build ignited his interest in carpentry and construction. The project provided him with hands-on experience in building and allowed him to carry his commitment to sustainability from his design studies into construction.

Commitment to Sustainable Building

Tim’s commitment to sustainability isn’t just a career choice; it’s been a consistent focus since his education in graphic design. He brings this ethos to every project, applying sustainable practices whenever possible. Since moving to Bristol, he previously worked for several environmentally focused companies before joining Hawkland.

Joining Hawkland: A Perfect Fit

Tim first heard about Hawkland through a colleague who studied at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT). Hawkland’s dedication to quality builds and creating a positive work environment stood out to him, aligning well with his values and sustainable approach. Drawn to Hawkland’s commitment to sustainability and the high standards they set in their projects, Tim knew it would be a good fit.

What a Week Looks Like

As a site manager, Tim’s typical week is all about coordination, safety, and clear communication. He ensures a safe working environment for the team, organises daily tasks, and provides direction to keep the team focused. Planning ahead for each project’s next phase is also a key part of his role, helping to keep things on schedule. Tim works closely with project managers and contractors, maintaining a strong flow of communication to ensure that every element is in place for a successful build.

The Rewards of Construction

Tim finds satisfaction in problem-solving and in delivering a finished product that meets clients’ expectations. The dynamic, hands-on environment of a construction site appeals to him, as does the opportunity to work alongside an experienced team. With Hawkland’s in-house architecture team, Tim is able to collaborate directly with designers, creating an integrated approach that ensures the quality and sustainability of each build.

Life Beyond the Job Site

Outside of work, Tim is an outdoor enthusiast who takes every opportunity to spend time in nature. Whether it’s hiking, surfing, or snowboarding, he’s always on the lookout for his next adventure. His passion for the outdoors aligns with his sustainable mindset, bringing balance to both his personal and professional life.
