Meet the directors

  • David Copeland

    BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT | CEO

    David Copeland's meticulous attention to detail carries through to his straw bale and pre-fab panel building experience as well as his decorating, carpentry and hemp & lime renovation work.

    David has a degree in Environmental Management and an MSc from The Centre For Alternative Technology, providing an excellent academic and theoretical background and perspective to his well-rounded practical skills.

    Beyond Hawkland, David is interested in organisations, their different structures and how their environment can have an impact on wellbeing, quality of work and sense of ownership.

    Currently attending the Natwest accelerator programme, David is focussing on the business development side of Hawkland.

  • Chris Hawker

    MANAGING DIRECTOR | COO

    A lifelong advocate for sustainability, Chris has been working with and researching sustainable materials and technologies in construction since 2009. He holds an MSc in Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies from the Centre for Alternative Technology, and was proud to help deliver the natural materials module on the same course for several years after his graduation, along with short courses in straw bale construction.

    An expert in straw design, application, and training, to date Chris has over 32 new build straw bale and panel projects under his belt throughout the UK and Europe. These cover a wide range of systems including timber-framed, SIPs, load-bearing, hybrid frame systems and external wraps.

    Chris now coordinates delivery of Hawkland's new build and retrofit construction projects. Working closely with our clients, architectural team, site managers and suppliers he provides an efficient and personal service from pre-construction all the way through to completion.

  • Ben Nother

    ARCHITECT | COO

    Ben is a Bristol based, ARB & RIBA registered, Architect with 15 years architectural experience in practice and education and 20 years in the construction industry. Due to his work in construction as a labourer he approaches Architecture with a practical and holistic understanding.

    Ben studied the Part 2 Professional Diploma in Architecture: Advanced environmental and energy studies at the Centre for Alternative Technology. Ben chose this particular course wanting to increase his understanding on how his architecture could respect the environment and work with it. The course helped him focus on sustainability during all parts of the design process.

    After the completion of the Professional Practice and Management in Architecture course (from the University of the West of England) Ben qualified as an architect and set up his practice.

  • Amber Vaughan Perrett

    ARCHITECTURAL ASSISTANT

    Amber joined Hawkland in March 2022, bringing her expertise to support Ben on the Architecture Team. She holds a BA in Architecture from the University of Portsmouth and has gained valuable experience in the design-and-build industry, contributing to various commercial and residential projects across Hampshire and London.

    Currently, she is pursuing a Master’s degree in Architecture at UWE while balancing her role at Hawkland. A shared commitment to sustainability drives Amber’s work at Hawkland, where she prioritizes long-lasting and accessible design solutions.

  • Joe Stewart

    ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGIST

    Joe is a Chartered architectural technologist, a member of the Green Register, the AECB and a Certified Passive House Designer.

    "I believe in responsible design, and my passion for the built environment is driven by the challenge to provide spaces that make use of sustainable resources while enhancing the lives of their inhabitants."

  • Dean Banfield

    PROJECT MANAGER

    Dean is an Associate Member of RICS and brings to Hawkland over 20 years Project Management experience within both residential and commercial property management.

    Working within the private and charity sectors, Dean has delivered a diverse range of refurbishment and new build projects and has a wealth of experience managing and maintaining a wide range of building types.

    Driven to contribute to positive change within the construction industry, Dean is currently studying an MSc in Green Building at The Centre for Alternative Technology. Dean believes “we don’t need to wait for groundbreaking technology or new inventions, we already have everything we need to build better, healthier, lower-impact homes right now!”

    Dean is especially interested in the qualities of natural building materials and in particular, their application in meeting the challenge of retrofitting historic buildings.

Over the years we have been lucky to work with a range of brilliant, intelligent and passionate people, all who share the same vision. To build a world, sustainably.

We now have a regular team based in Bristol working on our retrofit projects, and a wider group who come together on our new builds.
